Some of the Children and Their Stories

Namudondo Juliet is 8 yrs old and she goes to Evergreen primary school in Kotolo, This is her first year at school. Although she is 8 yrs old she had never been to school because of the difficulty that her parents were having to pay her tuition. Her parents are peasants and they just farm to have food for their family.

She has 6 other siblings and she is the fifth born in her family. Her other siblings also did not get an opportunity to go to school because of the tuition problem.

They had to get up early every morning to go to the garden and dig for half the day and later on go to the well to fetch water.

She is so excited to have a chance to go to school. She says she loves singing and numbers when she goes to school. Her dream is to become a teacher.

Gonna Jafery is 10 years old and he goes to Evergreen primary school in Kotolo. He loves school because of the difference it has brought in his life and his family. He had never been to school before because there was no primary school in his village. He has made many new friends and he says he now can speak to many other children unlike before.

He says the nearest primary school was in the next village which was so far away. It would take him 2 and half hours just to walk to school barefooted. So his parents just would not let him and his siblings to go to school since it was so far away.

He and his family were so excited when Evergreen school was started in their village. He now says he has an opportunity to learn English and numbers.

He says that although he is studying under a tree it is better than not going to school at all and he says very soon he will be able to sit in classroom when his school buildings have been completed.
